Although Max Verstappen’s drive at the Australian Grand Prix resulted in yet another withdrawal, the weekend provided Red Bull with a significant positive.
At the Australian Grand Prix, Red Bull was defeated on the racetrack by Ferrari, but they once again outpaced their competitors when it came to pit stops.
Max Verstappen’s race ended in withdrawal on Lap 39 of 58 caused by mechanical failure, giving the Milton Keynes-based team a weekend of mixed fortunes in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, Sergio Perez clinched P2 to become the team’s only points scorer, but he ended 20 seconds behind champion Charles Leclerc.
Despite this, Red Bull was able to take the top rank in terms of the weekend’s fastest pit-stop.
Perez’s pit stop took 2.27 seconds, making it not only the fastest in Melbourne, but also the fastest of the season.
McLaren’s fortunes continue to rise
Red Bull’s biggest rivals in this area turned to be McLaren. Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo earned the second and third quickest pit stops in the race. Both drivers managed a time of 2.42 seconds, which is incredible.
The papaya outfit has a record of winning in the pit lane, having initially set the fastest time of all in Saudi Arabia.
Williams is another squad that has a history of quick pit stops. Nicholas Latifi finished fourth overall in Melbourne with a time of 2.53 seconds.
Ferrari finished sixth, with Charles Leclerc’s pit stop clocking in at 2.71 seconds, nearly four tenths of a second slower than Red Bull.
